Many people say "Oh", when seeing a brick wall painted - it definitely makes the wall look more elegant and lighter.

The reason why I, personally wouldn't rush with painting the brick wall is that if you add more light accents, like furniture, curtains, etc, the relatively dark brick wall may provide so much needed contrast. Look at the picture below, for instance.

I hope this photo might provide you with some inspiration - mixing light furniture with dark brick and, perhaps, dark door and window frames may give some very pleasing results.
